 Food & Entertaining Q&A

I am trying to follow an American based recipe that requires that I use an ingredient called 'Allspice'. First of all, what is allspice and is there a substitute that I can use, as I have not been able to find this ingredient anywhere in the supermarkets?

Also called “Jamaica pepper,” allspice is the dried unripe berry of the pimento plant, an evergreen, native to Central America, Mexico, South America, and the West Indies.

Allspice may be most often thought of as a baking spice, used in cookies, pies, pudding.

A simple substitute would be: 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. ground cloves, 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg to 1. tsp of allspice
