10 Reasons to go on a Cooking Course

1. Fun
Cooking Schools are loads of fun, everyone is usually just as clueless as everybody else and it doesn’t take long before someone sends the whole class into hysterics with a silly question on culinary basics. They are usually quite social and you can relax whilst learning some new skills and dishes. Cooking courses are also a great way to meet other like-minded individuals.

2. Team-Building
Cooking courses are excellent for team-building activities and have proved to be highly successful amongst small and large companies alike. Most cookery schools offer specialized courses just for team-building events. A variety of exercises teaches teams how to work together and communicate to produce a desirable outcome. Definitely something different to try for your next team-building event and guaranteed to be lots of fun.

3. Learn New Cooking Skills and Dishes
Cooking classes are the perfect way to expand your culinary repertoire. Learn techniques and skills that make preparing and cooking food a lot simpler and faster. Even if it just means learning how to make one new dish (as opposed to absolutely no dishes), that means one less evening where you’ll have to eat Kentucky for dinner.

4. Inspiration to learn more
Chefs and Cooking instructors can be really passionate people. Ever seen Gordon Ramsay get fired up in his kitchen or the contestants on Top Chef who spend hours conjuring up dishes we’ve never heard of? Yes, this is passion to the extreme. Allow yourself to be inspired by their energy and enthusiasm.

5. Bonding
There is something quite romantic about going on a cooking course with your partner – and definitely something rather beneficial if neither of you know how to cook! Working together to create a cheese sauce, a non-packet gravy or just mastering the art of cooking rice properly can be extremely rewarding…and entertaining!

6. Confidence
Have you ever dreamt of being one of those people who can have a glass of wine with friends whilst watching over two dishes in the oven, stirring a sauce on the stovetop, intermittently stopping to open the gate for another guest and still not have a bead of sweat showing and then on top of that actually contributing meaningfully to the conversation? Sjoooee! Answer is yes? Well, then a couple of basic cooking courses are a sure way to get your domestic prowess and confidence into tip top shape.

7. Take your skills to a different level
Advanced cooking courses are a great way to transform any average cook into an aspiring Jamie Oliver.. Be prepared to learn new techniques as well as foodie words - the difference between a béarnaise and a béchamel, a Chanterelle and Champignon or even Cannelloni and Carpaccio.

8. Start a new hobbie
Put your scrapbooking tools away, cooking and baking have got to be one of the most useful and practical hobbies that you could embark on in your quest for a new self-fulfilling activity. If the “what should we have for dinner thought” totally numbs your mind and the only ideas you can generate from that short little thought are cottage pie or spaghetti bolognaise, you just know that you need to re-invent your cooking attitude. Get excited about cooking by viewing it more as a hobby than something that has to be done. Subscribe to foodie magazines, search the internet for new recipes and watch some cooking programs to inspire your inner creativity!

9. Investing in yourself
Learning any new skill is a great way of investing in “you”. Register for a couple of cooking classes in the evenings (instead of watching TV) and spend your time having fun, learning something new and meeting people. A rewarding and enriching way to spend an evening!

10. Improve a specific skill
For those who want to learn or improve on a specific area of baking or cooking, a short specific course could be the way to go. These are great if you want to learn how to make tasty pastries and cakes or how to garnish and present food or how to make sushi. Many cookery schools and even chef schools offer these short specific courses.

Before you go on a cooking course, make sure to find out how ‘hands-on” the cooking course will be. Some classes are completely hands-on where you cook a dish on your own from start to finish whilst others are semi hands-on where you might assist the chef / instructor in making a dish or half of the dish has already been prepared. Then there are those that take the form of a cooking demo and you get to watch the chef create the dish and afterwards usually get to sample the food!
